UK Prime Minister Theresa May said Wednesday she would fervently contest the confidence vote in her leadership of the Conservative Party, set to proceed later in the day
MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) UK Prime Minister Theresa May said Wednesday she would fervently contest the confidence vote in her leadership of the Conservative Party, set to proceed later in the day.
Earlier in the day, Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 committee in the House of Commons, said the required amount of letters needed to trigger the vote had been collected.
"I will contest that vote with everything I've got ... A change in leadership in the Conservative Party now will put our country's future at risk and create uncertainty when we can least afford it," May told reporters.
May stressed that she spent the previous day talking to her European counterparts and senior Brussels officials to secure reassurances on the Brexit deal and was due to travel to Dublin for further talks, but would now have to stay in London.
On Monday, May said she was delaying the parliament vote on the Brexit agreement originally scheduled for Tuesday, amid lawmakers' concerns over the Irish border backstop.
