Abkhazia voices full support for legitimately-elected Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the Abkhazian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday amid an escalation of the political crisis in the Latin American country

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) Abkhazia voices full support for legitimately-elected Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the Abkhazian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday amid an escalation of the political crisis in the Latin American country.

"The Republic of Abkhazia expresses full support for legitimately-elected President Nicolas Maduro," the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also expressed hope that that the country would manage to resolve the crisis within the constitutional framework, without external interference.

On Tuesday, the Venezuelan National Assembly which has been acting as opposition to incumbent President Maduro since the establishment of the Constituent National Assembly, a parallel legislature, last year declared Maduro an usurper.

On Wednesday, National Assembly leader Juan Guaido self-proclaimed himself the country's interim president, arguing that the constitution allowed him to call a new election after the opposition denounced Maduro's re-election last year as illegitimate.

Guaido's interim presidency has been supported by around a dozen countries, mostly Latin American ones, and by the United States as well.

Maduro, in turn, insisted that he was country's constitutional president and called the opposition leader a puppet manipulated by the United States.
