About 1,000 Refugees Return to Syria From Abroad Over Past 24 Hours - Defense Ministry

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2019) Nearly 1,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their home country from Jordan and Lebanon over the past 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry's Center for the Reception, Allocation and Accommodation of Refugees said on Tuesday.

"Over the past day, 974 refugees have returned to the Syrian Arab Republic from the territories of foreign countries, including 438 people (132 women, 223 children) from Lebanon through the Jaydet -Yabus and Talkalakh checkpoints, and 536 people (161 women, 27 children) from Jordan via the Nasib checkpoint," the center said in its daily bulletin.

The center added that 226 internally displaced Syrians had returned to their homes over the given period.

In total, 107,689 Syrian refugees have returned to the country from abroad since July 18, 2018.

The center added that there were 10 operating checkpoints located on Syrian-Lebanese and Syrian-Jordan borders, as well as on the Syrian territory.

According to the bulletin, the Syrian engineering units also defused 36 explosive devices, including one improvised device, in the provinces of Quneitra, Homs and Damascus.

As the Syrian government has regained control over most of the country's territories that were seized by terrorists, it is now focused on creating favorable conditions for repatriating refugees. Moscow is assisting Damascus in this process, along with providing humanitarian aid to civilians and being a guarantor of the ceasefire.
