As many as 4,000 police forces will be involved in ensuring security during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the capital of Papua New Guinea on November 17-18, the event's official website said on Wednesday.
According to the organizers, increased security measures have been already in place at the airport and the center of Port Moresby. A number of roads will be blocked during the summit. The authorities have also temporarily toughened punishment for public order offenses.
Around 15,000 foreign delegates are expected to attend the summit. The Russian delegation will be headed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
According to the ABC news broadcaster, Australia will assist the host nation in accommodating foreign guests.
In particular, three Australian cruise ships in Port Moresby's harbor are expected to house some 4,000 delegates.
Australia's Cairns Airport will be also ready to accommodate some of the planes with foreign delegates, if there will be no enough room at Port Moresby Airport.
To organize the summit, Papua New Guinea has allocated $330 million, apart from $72 more million spent on the construction of the APEC House, according to the media outlet.
In the run-up to the summit, Papua New Guinea also bought 40 Maserati Quattroporte and three Bentley Flying Spur cars to meet APEC delegates, pledging to sell the luxury vehicles after the event.
