SIMFEROPOL (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th March, 2019) Approximately 4.5 million vehicles have passed through the Crimean Bridge since the opening of its road section in mid-May 2018, a deputy head of the Federal Highway Administration Taman of the Russian Federal Road Agency, Grigory Sokol, said on Thursday.
"Over the past 10 months, 4.5 million vehicles, including over 260,000 trucks and more than 50,000 passenger buses have passed through the bridge," Sokol told reporters.
Sokol added that, in average, the bridge is crossed by about 15,000 vehicles per day. A record-high daily traffic was recorded on August 12, 2018, when more than 30,000 cars drove along the highway.
On May 15, 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin opened the road section of the Crimean Bridge.
The Crimean Bridge, which connects the peninsula with Russia's Krasnodar Territory, is the longest in the country. The bridge was initially supposed to open for vehicle traffic in December 2018, but construction was finished ahead of schedule.
Crimea, former Ukraine's territory, rejoined Russia in 2014, when 97 percent of those participating in a regional referendum voted for the reunification. Ukraine and the majority of Western countries continue to consider Crimea a Ukrainian territory. Russia has repeatedly said that the vote was held in compliance with international law and following a democratic procedure.
