CAIRO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th April, 2019) The Algerian moderate Islamist Movement of Society for Peace party welcomed on Tuesday in a statement the resignation of the country's head of the constitutional council and called on the Algerian interim president, Abdelkader Bensalah, to follow suit.
Earlier in the day, the head of the Algerian Constitutional Council, Tayeb Belaiz, stepped down, having spent less than two months in office, amid ongoing anti-government protests calling for the resignation of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's establishment.
"Resignation is an important step in the stabilization of the situation," the party said in a statement obtained by Sputnik.
On April 12, Nasser Hamdadush, the head of the party's parliamentary group, said that the party did not recognize Bensalah's authority and would not engage in dialogue with the interim government until Bensalah resigned.
Bensalah replaced Bouteflika, who was forced out of office in early April, following months-long protests across Algeria. The parliament gave Bensalah 90 days to see the country through a transition. His confirmation was met with fresh demonstrations in Algiers where hundreds of protesters took to the streets shouting "Bensalah, get out!" The lawmaker is seen as a close ally of the ousted president.
