MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th March, 2019) Algiers is content to hear that Russia considers the protests and current political tensions in Algeria a domestic matter, Algerian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said Tuesday.
Lamamra is currently on a visit to Russia and has already held a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
"I was very content to hear from Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov that the Russian Federation perfectly understands the nature of the current situation that our country is currently undergoing, considers the situation an internal matter for Algeria and believes that Algerians will be able to with their will and with their efforts overcome these internal difficulties and will move forward together," Lamamra told a press conference.
The visit is taking place amid protests in Algeria, which began in February in response to incumbent President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's plan to run for the fifth term. Last week, Bouteflika said he would not run and proposed setting up a national conference. The election initially scheduled for April 18 has been postponed, and the new date will be decided by the conference.
