American Airlines Halts Flights to Venezuela Citing Safety, Security Issues

Three daily flights from the United States to Venezuela have been terminated because the latter country is no longer considered a safe destination, American Airlines said in a statement on Friday

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th March, 2019) Three daily flights from the United States to Venezuela have been terminated because the latter country is no longer considered a safe destination, American Airlines said in a statement on Friday.

"American has temporarily suspended our operation into Caracas and Maracaibo," the statement said. "The safety and security of our team members and customers is always number one and American will not operate to countries we don't consider safe."

American Airlines previously flew to the Caracas twice daily and to Maracaibo once daily, the airline said.

The situation in Venezuela has worsened since the country's opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president on January 23. The United States and 54 other countries have recognized Guaido Venezuela's interim president.

Russia, China, Turkey, Bolivia and other countries have voiced support for the government of President Nicolas Maduro as the only legitimate authority in Venezuela.

Maduro has characterized Guaido as a puppet of the United States and said Washington has attempted a coup d'etat to exact a change in government.
