Antiochian Orthodox Church Categorically Opposes Split In Orthodox World - Patriarch
DAMASCUS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th January, 2019) The Antiochian Orthodox Church categorically opposes the existing row between Orthodox churches and supports Russia's position with regard to the issue of the Ukrainian church, Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch and All The East, John X, said.
"We do not categorically accept what is happening now in the Orthodox world and what is often aimed at dividing and weakening Orthodox Christians ... As an Orthodox church, we would very much like to preserve the unity of Orthodox Christians in the world ... We are very deeply concerned about the situation and fully support you on this issue," the patriarch said during his meeting with the Russian delegation.
The patriarch added the Antiochian Orthodox Church had addressed the Constantinople Patriarchate, asking it to take action to unite churches and abandon the existing divide between them.
On January 6, Constantinople Patriarch Bartholomew handed over the tomos of autocephaly to the head of the newly-established Ukrainian church. Under the tomos, the so-called Orthodox Church of Ukraine will have jurisdiction exclusively over Ukraine and will not be authorized to appoint bishops and establish its parishes abroad, becoming effectively dependent on Constantinople.
The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) along with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) refused to recognize the establishment of the new church structure in Ukraine and Constantinople's decision to grant autocephaly to the new Ukrainian church.
