CAIRO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st October, 2018) The Arab League is calling for an independent investigation into the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi without politicization of the case, the organization said on Sunday in a statement.
Saudi Arabia admitted on Friday that Khashoggi died in a fight at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, after having denied any knowledge of his whereabouts for two weeks. Riyadh said 18 people had been already arrested over their involvement in the incident.
"The Arab League rejects politicization of this case, its use by anyone to threaten Saudi Arabia with sanctions or other unilateral steps," the statement said.
The Arab League pointed out that Saudi Arabia remained a key actor ensuring stability and security in the middle East region as well as in the whole world.
The organization expressed its confidence that Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud would make all the efforts to investigate the death of Khashoggi.
Khashoggi, who has been working for The Washington Post newspaper as a columnist and known for his criticism of Saudi authorities, went missing in Istanbul on October 2 after he entered the Saudi consulate and never came out. The incident caused a significant public outcry in Turkey as well as many Western countries.
