ADDIS ABABA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 10th February, 2019) The League of Arab States is looking to enhance cooperation on advancing the peace settlement in Libya with the African Union, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the secretary-general of the League of Arab States, said during the opening ceremony of the 32nd African Union Summit on Sunday.
Both the League of Arab States and the African Union are engaged in Libyan crisis settlement, since the northern African country holds membership in both blocs.
"We need to renew our commitment towards supporting the Libyan state and accompany our brothers there towards stability in order to address the migrant crisis on its territory, promote political dialogue among its parties and complete its transition period through convening elections people aspire to," Gheit said.
Libya has been in a state of conflict since the country's long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011. While the eastern part of the country is governed by the parliament in Tobruk, which is backed by the Libyan National Army, the UN-backed Government of National Accord operates in the country's west and is headquartered in Tripoli.
