Arab League Urges World Community to Back Efforts of Egypt, UN to End Gaza Hostilities

The Arab League said Tuesday that it condemns the conflict escalation by Israel in the Gaza Strip, calling on the international community to support the efforts of Egypt and the United Nations to resolve the situation.

CAIRO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th November, 2018) The Arab League said Tuesday that it condemns the conflict escalation by Israel in the Gaza Strip, calling on the international community to support the efforts of Egypt and the United Nations to resolve the situation.

"Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit condemned the military escalation by Israel and the air raids on the Gaza Strip, the victims of which are civilians in the Gaza Strip. He called on the international community to take swift and decisive action to encourage Israel, as an occupying force, to immediately cease military operations in Gaza, which are a clear violation of international law, and to support the efforts by Egypt and the United Nations in this direction," the statement reads.

Aboul Gheit also stressed the need for Israel to comply with the Geneva Convention on the protection of civilians and the inadmissibility of attacks on civilian facilities.

Earlier in the day, the UN special coordinator for the middle East peace process, Nickolay Mladenov, said that United Nations was working closely with Egypt and all concerned to end a spike of violence between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

On Monday, the Israel Defense Forces said that it had detected over 400 missile launches by Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip, intercepting dozens of them. In response to the Palestinian shelling, the Israeli military attacked over 100 Hamas militants-related targets in the Gaza Strip from the ground and the air.
