Argentinian Foreign Ministry Urges Maduro to Refrain From Intimidating Opposition

BUENOS AIRES (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th January, 2019) The Argentinian Foreign Ministry called on the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Sunday to refrain from intimidating opposition politicians and ensure their rights following the arrest of opposition parliament speaker Juan Guaido.

A message posted on Guaido's Twitter page claimed he had been seized by Venezuelan intelligence agents on the way to a political rally, just days after he said he was prepared to take over as the nation's interim president. The speaker of the opposition-controlled National Assembly was later released.

"The Argentinian government hopes that Maduro's regime will ensure civil and political liberties and freedom of movement of the Venezuelan opposition members as well as their physical integrity refraining from any acts of intimidation and persecution, similar to those suffered by the speaker of the National Assembly, the only legitimate body in this country," the ministry's statement read.

Argentina was one of the countries that signed a statement of the Lima Group, which refused to recognize Maduro's re-election in May for a second-term.
