At least 45 people died in Iraq on Thursday when a tourist ferry capsized in Al Gabat, just north of Mosul, a local security source told Sputnik

BAGHDAD (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st March, 2019) At least 45 people died in Iraq on Thursday when a tourist ferry capsized in Al Gabat, just north of Mosul, a local security source told Sputnik.

"Forty-five bodies have been recovered so far. Search-and-rescue operations are still ongoing," the source said.

According to the source, the main cause of the accident was the excessive number of passengers. The second cause was that the water level in the Tigris River has increased due to the opening of floodgates in the Mosul Dam.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi satellite tv network Alsumaria reported that at least 30 people had been rescued from the capsized ferry.
