MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th March, 2019) At least five children died in the Rukban refugee camp in Syria over the past 10 days, the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria said Friday.
The camp, which is situated in the US-controlled zone surrounding its military base in At Tanf, is believed to host around 40,000 refugees.
"Despite the measures taken, the evacuation of refugees from the Rukban camp is actually blocked because of the American side, which does not allow buses to evacuate refugees and refuses to ensure the safe movement of humanitarian convoys inside the 55-kilometer zone around its base in al-Tanf. According to information received by the Russian Centre for Reconciliation from residents of the camp, only in the last 10 days there were at least five cases of death of children," head of the center Maj.
Gen. Viktor Kupchishin said.
He added that the center also registered at least 14 ceasefire breaches in Syria's Idlib de-escalation zone.
"During the day militants carried out the shelling of the village Safsafa [two times], Bait Djanauro, Ikko, Kermel, Alil in Latakia province, settlements of Aleppo (five times) and Makanis al-Duwairy in Aleppo province, as well as Umm Sahridj and Abu Dali in Idlib province," Kupchishin said.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups and militant and terrorist organizations. Russia, along with Turkey and Iran, is a guarantor of the ceasefire regime in Syria. Moscow has also been providing humanitarian aid to residents of the crisis-torn country.
