At least eight Russian fans of CSKA Moscow football club were injured in an escalator collapse in Rome Metro in the center of the city, the police department of the Italian capital told Sputnik on Tuesday.

Later in the day, CSKA is scheduled to play UEFA Champions League match with AS Roma on Stadio Olimpico.

"A group of CSKA fans went upstairs from the station. At that moment, the escalator collapsed. At least eight of them were injured. The number of victims may increase," a spokesman for the Roman police said.

According to him, all those injured have been hospitalized.

Metro station Repubblica has been closed after the accident.
