MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th October, 2018) Leader of Bavaria's Christian Social Union (CSU) party, the sister party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Horst Seehofer hopes that the chancellor's party will do well in the upcoming parliamentary election in the state of Hesse on October 28.
According to the preliminary results of Sunday's parliamentary election in Bavaria, the CSU is leading with 37.2 percent of votes. The party, that has been ruling in the region for decades, may have secured its worst result ever in the elections in Bavaria. It means that the party might get only 85 out of 205 seats in the local parliament, thus losing the ability to independently form the government.
"Apart from forming Bavaria's government, in the next two weeks, our task is to make sure that the CDU succeeds in Hesse, we are keenly interested in this and in the grand coalition in Berlin working with stability," Seehofer told reporters.
The government in Hesse is currently formed by a coalition of the CDU and the Greens, which has 61 seats out of 110. Most recent polls showed that the Christian Democrats might fail to secure the majority in the local parliament in the upcoming election and will have to form a coalition once again.
