Belgian Hainaut Province Governor Triggers Crisis Procedure Amid Fuel Tax Protest -Reports

Tommy Leclercq, the governor of Hainaut province in Belgium's southern Wallonia region, on Tuesday triggered a crisis procedure after drivers blocked a section of Mons-Brussels motorway in protest over diesel taxes.

BRUSSELS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th November, 2018) Tommy Leclercq, the governor of Hainaut province in Belgium's southern Wallonia region, on Tuesday triggered a crisis procedure after drivers blocked a section of Mons-Brussels motorway in protest over diesel taxes.

The so-called yellow vests protesters have blocked the motorway with a tree, causing traffic congestion.

"The decision [to invoke] the crisis procedure has been made to examine the situation with the road-blocking [protest] and take measures to lift the blockade," Leclercq told reporters.

Media reported in April that over the past three years Belgium's diesel car tax had increased by 30 percent as part of the government's efforts to discourage the use of diesel engines.
