Belgium Believes IS Foreign Fighters Should Be Held in Regional Detention Camps - Gov't

The Belgian national security council believes that foreign terrorist fighters, who fought in Syria alongside militants of the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia), should be prosecuted under "a certain form of international justice" system and serve their sentence in regional camps, a spokesperson for the Belgian government said on Thursday

BRUSSELS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st February, 2019) The Belgian national security council believes that foreign terrorist fighters, who fought in Syria alongside militants of the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia), should be prosecuted under "a certain form of international justice" system and serve their sentence in regional camps, a spokesperson for the Belgian government said on Thursday.

"The preference is a certain form of international justice ... Camps in the region should be the place of detention [for foreign terrorist fighters]," the spokesperson told reporters after a meeting of the council, chaired by Prime Minister Charles Michel.

The issue of potential return of foreign terrorist fighters to Europe and challenges associated with the returnees have been in the spotlight for several years now.

On February 16, US President Donald Trump called on the European countries, including the United Kingdom, France and Germany, to take back more than 800 IS fighters, captured by the United States in Syria, and put them on trial.
