BERLIN (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 06th May, 2021) Germany and Turkey are coordinating their plans to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Wednesday.
"Turkey is an important ally within NATO. Germany has always emphasized this. This will be of particular importance in the future.
We cooperate well as allies in NATO, and this is true now for Afghanistan," Maas said at a joint briefing with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, in Berlin.
The diplomat said that both countries were "very closely coordinating plans for the withdrawal" of troops from the South Asian nation.
He recalled that both Germany and Turkey were the participating countries in the NATO mission in Afghanistan.
On May 1, the United States and NATO began withdrawing ground forces from Afghanistan. The full withdrawal is planned by September 11.
