Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced on Tuesday his decision to leave the post of the head of the state
Nursultan Abishuly Nazarbayev was born in the village of Chemolgan, located in the Almaty Region of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, which was a part of the Soviet Union.
In 1967, Nazarbayev graduated from the technical college of the Karagandy metallurgical complex. In 1960-1969, he worked at this plant.
In 1969-1979, Nazarbayev did work for the Communist Party and Komsomol (USSR's All-Union Leninist Young Communist League) in the city of Temirtau, located in the Karagandy Region, and in the Karagandy Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).
In 1979-1984, he was secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in Kazakhstan. In 1984-1989, Nazarbayev headed the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic.
In 1989-1991, Nazarbayev was first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, the de-facto leader of the Kazakh republic within the Soviet Union. At the same time, in February-April 1990, he chaired the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Nazarbayev remained in power, becoming president of the independent Republic of Kazakhstan. He won presidential elections in 1991, 1999, 2005, 2011 and 2015.
In 1995, Kazakhstan also held a referendum on extending the presidential term until 2000, with the initiative having been supported by more than 95 percent of voters.
On April 26, 2015, Nazarbayev won the early presidential election with more than 97 percent of voters.
Nazarbayev is also a leader of the Nur Otan political party, head of the country's Security Council, Council for National Fund Management, Assembly of People, World Association of Kazakhs, Foreign Investors' Council and Supreme Board of Trustees of the Nazarbayev University.
He is also doctor of economics, academic of the National academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, honorary professor and honorary doctor of a number of foreign and Kazakh universities.
Nazarbayev wrote a number of books as well as receiving a number of foreign awards.
He has a wife, Sara Nazarbayeva, who is a founder and president of the Bobek international children's foundation and president of the S.O.S. Children's Villages of Kazakhstan foundation.
Nazarbayev has three daughters: Dariga (born in 1963), Dinara (born in 1967) and Aliya (born in 1980). Dariga is a member of the Kazakh Senate, heading its Committee on International Relations, Defense and Security; Dinara is heading the board of directors of the Kazakh-British Technical University; while Aliya is the head of a construction firm.
