Bolivian President Says Venezuelan Political Crisis Needs Peaceful Solution

MONTEVIDEO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 07th February, 2019) Bolivia supports the initiative of the European Union, Uruguay and Mexico to resolve the situation in Venezuela and stresses need for peaceful solution to the political crisis in the Latin American country, President Evo Morales said on Thursday ahead of a meeting on Venezuela in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo.

Representatives from eight EU member states and four Latin American countries, including Bolivia, are expected to address ways to resolve the current crisis in Venezuela at the first meeting of the International Contact Group (IGC) in Montevideo later on Thursday.

"We express our support to the proposal by Mexico, Uruguay, the European Union and countries of the Caribbean on finding solution to the situation in Venezuela.

We advocate a peaceful solution to the situation which will respect the nation's sovereignty," Morales said on Twitter.

Speaker of Venezuela's parliament Juan Guaido proclaimed himself the country's interim president on January 23. Incumbent President Nicolas Maduro has in the meantime called him a US puppet and accused Washington of organizing a coup in the Latin American country.

The United States, Canada and a number of other countries have recognized Guaido's leadership, while Russia, China, Mexico and Turkey have stressed that Maduro is the legitimate president and called for dialogue.
