MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th March, 2019) US National Security Adviser John Bolton said on Sunday that he was not ruling out new arms control talks between Washington and Moscow, but suggested that Beijing should be also included in them.
"China is building up its nuclear capacity now. It's one of the reasons why we're looking at strengthening our national missile defense system here in the United States. And it's one reason why if we're going to have another arms control negotiation, for example, with the Russians, it may make sense to include China in that discussion as well," Bolton said in an interview with the AM 970 The Answer radio station.
On February 2, the United States formally suspended its obligations under the 1987 US-Soviet Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty and launched the withdrawal process, which willed be completed within six months unless Moscow remedies its alleged violations of the bilateral arms control deal.
The United States has been claiming that the range of Russia's 9M729 missile violates the treaty's limits, but Moscow has denied the allegations, stressing that they were unsubstantiated. Russia, in turn, has complained that US defense systems in Europe were equipped with launchers capable of firing cruise missiles at ranges prohibited under the INF Treaty.
