Burundi to sue BBC over documentary on alleged killings of opponents

The Burundian government has said it is going to sue the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for publishing a "fake" documentary on alleged killings of government opponents by the Burundian intelligence agency.

BUJUMBURA, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Dec, 2018 ) :The Burundian government has said it is going to sue the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for publishing a "fake" documentary on alleged killings of government opponents by the Burundian intelligence agency.

"We are going to sue the BBC. Burundi as a state will be compensated, and so will be Burundian people and agents that have been defamed in that video published by the BBC," said Burundian Justice Minister Aimee Laurentine Kanyana in Bujumbura, capital city of Burundi, after visiting a house with foreign diplomats accredited to Burundi, where the killing was allegedly made, Xinhua reported.

The BBC on Dec. 2 published a documentary that talks about six places in various neighborhoods of Bujumbura where government opponents were allegedly killed or tortured by Burundi's National Intelligence Service after the outbreak of Burundi's 2015 crisis triggered by the third term bid of Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza.

The described human blood that was seen flowing in a drainage channel in front of the visited house in southern Bujumbura in the BBC documentary was the blood of goats, said the minister.

The Burundian National Media Council has suspended the BBC radio station from broadcasting on the Burundian territory for six months since May 7 for violating principles of "balance of information" and "rigorous verification" of sources.

Although the expected expiration date has passed, the suspension has not been lifted.
