WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th August, 2018) Two contracts with a combined value of $115 million have been inked to help protect ships in the Canadian Navy from enemy missiles with electronic countermeasures and decoys, Armed Forces Canada said in a press release on Friday.

"Our defense policy promised an agile, multi-purpose Navy and we are delivering on that promise with todays $115 million investment," Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan said in the release.

Lockheed Martin won a $92.4 million contract to maintain and overhaul the Reprogrammable Advance Multimode Shipboard Electronic Countermeasures System (RAMSES) to protect the Canadas Halifax-class frigates against radio guided missiles, the release explained.

In addition, a $21.1-million contract to Rheinmetall Canada calls for installation of a third launcher on the frigates to upgrade the Multi Ammunition Softkill System (MASS), which launches decoys to protect vessels against missiles with radio, laser and infrared guidance, the release said.

The third launcher will give Canadas frigates 360 degree protection against enemy threats, according to the release.
