Canada transport, shelter drive inflation in October

OTTAWA, , (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th Nov, 2016 ) - The rising cost of shelter and transportation in Canada fueled the increase in inflation in October, but food prices fell for the first in 16 years, the government reported Friday.

Consumer prices rose 1.5 percent compared to October 2015, in line with expectations and slightly higher than the September pace, when prices rose 1.3 percent, Statistics Canada reported.

The cost of transportation rose three percent year-over-year, due to rising gasoline prices, which rose 2.5 percent.

car prices increased 4.4 percent, following a 5.8 percent rise in September, the steepest climb in nearly two years. Shelter posted its largest increase since January 2015, rising 1.9 percent, after a 1.7 percent jump in September. However, food prices fell 0.7 percent, the first decline since January 2000, Statistics Canada said.
