"During the meeting, the military leaders discussed issues of mutual interest, including reducing the risk of incidents in the course of military activities. The meeting was constructive," the ministry said.

The meeting took place in the Finnish government's residence of Konigstedt in the city of Vantaa some 24,8 miles north of Helsinki.

The Wall Street Journal cited US sources as saying that the Russian and US military chiefs discussed mitigation of risks and resolution of conflicts, not providing much specifics. As noted in the report, the meeting took place as the United States explores ways to combat terrorism after its withdrawal from Afghanistan last month.
