MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2018) China inaugurated its embassy in the Dominican Republic following the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, local media reported.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi traveled to the Caribbean nation for the inauguration ceremony which took place on Friday, the Chinese CGTN broadcaster reported.
"China and the Dominican Republic are separated by a large geographic distance. However, great Chinese thinkers a thousand years ago said that intimate friendships can overcome distances. This phrase from this poet perfectly describes our sense of excitement in this moment," Wang said during the ceremony, as quoted by the broadcaster.
Wang noted that the Dominican Republic was China's largest trading partner in the Caribbean, according to the outlet.
Dominican Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas, in his turn, emphasized the importance of relations with Beijing for Santo Domingo and noted that the establishment of diplomatic ties would benefit both countries.
China and the Dominican Republic signed an official communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations in May.
The situation resulted in a row between the Caribbean nation and Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory and which does not recognize the central government in Beijing. Taiwan cut off its ties with the Dominican Republic after the latter established relations with China.
