BEIJING (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 04th March, 2019) Former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and his alleged accomplice Michael Spavor are suspected of stealing state secrets while in China, Chinese media reported Monday, citing authorities.

The two were detained in China for endangering national security shortly after Huawai tech firm's chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada at the US request.

She faces extradition.

Kovrig, who served as vice consul at the Canadian embassy in Beijing and then consul at the Hong Kong consulate, is accused of having collected sensitive data through his contact Spavor since 2017, according to Xinhua.

He now works as a Northeast Asia adviser for the International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based nonprofit, and has frequently travelled to China on a business visa.
