BEIJING (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th January, 2019) The Chinese government confirmed on Thursday that Vice Premier Liu He would visit the United States in late January to take part in the next round of trade talks between the two countries.
On Tuesday, the South China Morning Post newspaper reported that Liu would visit the United States to reach an agreement on ending the so-called trade war between the world's two largest economies. He is expected to meet with US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.
"At the invitation of US Treasury Secretary and US Trade Representative, Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Liu He will make a visit on January 30-31 to participate in consultations on Chinese-US trade issues," a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, Gao Feng, said at a briefing.
The negotiations in Washington will be the second round of consultations between the countries this year. The first round was held at the level of deputy ministers in Beijing on January 7-9.
China and the United States have been engaged in a trade war since US President Donald Trump announced in June that $50 billion worth of Chinese goods would be subject to 25 percent tariffs in a bid to fix the US-Chinese trade deficit. Since then, the two countries have exchanged several rounds of trade tariffs.
In early December, Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, called for a truce in their escalating trade war after their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires.
