'Clinical' Worcester delight Solomons with Bristol thrashing

London, Oct 7 (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 8th Oct, 2018 ) :Worcester director of rugby Alan Solomons was proud of the way his side took their chances as they achieved their record English Premiership win with a 52-7 hammering of Bristol on Sunday.

The hosts ran in seven tries through Francois Venter, Ryan Mills, Marco Mama, Chris Pennell, Josh Adams, Bryce Heem and Gerrit-Jan van Velze with Duncan Weir converting the lot, while Pennell also landed a penalty.

Worcester's victory topped their 51-10 defeat of Newcastle back in May 2008 and left veteran South African coach Solomons delighted by the way the club had taken their work on the training field into a match situation.

"We spoke about our finishing during the week and it's very satisfying that we pretty much took every chance we had," he said.

"We had a shaky first 10 minutes but after that we were able to convert pressure into points and Chris Pennell's try early in the second half was crucial as it probably ruled out any comeback." Victory saw Worcester, who often found themselves batting to avoid relegation from English rugby union's top flight, move up into seventh place in the Premiership after six matches, with only one club in the 12-strong league demoted at the end of the season.

"We should have won both our home games against Newcastle and Wasps as we created opportunities but didn't finish them off," said Solomons.

"Still I'm happy with 13 points from the first six. As I've said the Premiership is not a sprint but a marathon and there's a long way to go but at least we've had a decent start." Promoted Bristol avoided being 'nilled' when Yann Thomas scored a try converted by Ian Madigan but that was scant consolation or the visitors.

"That's life, we've all had games like that, both as players and coaches, and you have to take your medicine and move on," said Bristol boss Pat Lam.

Bristol have won two of their opening six league games this season but their last two Premiership fixtures have now seen them concede 97 points in total.

"In both these games, our defence has been completely out of shape but if you are consistently defending, fatigue will kick in," said Lam.

But the Samoa great added Bristol had already surprised a few pundits in a league where reigning champions Saracens and Exeter, last season's losing finalists, remain the teams to beat given they've both won their first six Premiership matches this term.

"We should have won against Northampton last week but most thought that we and Worcester would finish 11th and 12th in the league but both have done extremely well in their opening fixtures," Lam insisted.

"Saracens and Exeter are in a different league and the rest of us are striving to get there."
