Corbyn Says May's Government 'in Chaos' as Prime Minister Wins Confidence Vote

LONDON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th December, 2018) Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the UK main opposition Labour Party, said that the government of Prime Minister Theresa May was in chaos, adding she was unable to deliver a deal on the UK-EU divorce, after May survived a confidence vote by the lawmakers from her Conservative Party.

During the vote, which was held late on Wednesday, 200 parliamentarians backed May while 117 lawmakers voted against her. The ballot followed May's move to postpone a meaningful parliamentary vote on the Brexit deal.

"Tonight's vote makes no difference to the lives of our people. The Prime Minister has lost her majority in Parliament, her government is in chaos and she is unable to deliver a Brexit deal that works for the country and puts jobs and the economy first," Corbyn said in a statement published on the Labour's website.

On Monday, May called off the parliamentary vote on her Brexit deal with the European Union, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday. The prime minister has acknowledged that a significant number of lawmakers would not support the agreement, particularly its provisions concerning the Northern Ireland backstop.

May has said she will refer to Brussels for additional reassurances on the plan.

Corbyn suggested that "it's clear" that the prime minister had not been able to negotiate the required changes with EU officials.

The Labour leader added his party was ready to deliver the Brexit that protected living standards and working rights.

The Brexit deal was agreed by May's team and EU negotiators in late November after months of negotiations that saw many suggesting a no-deal Brexit would be a possibility.

However, lawmakers from the Labour and other parties, including Tories, have opposed the deal. The UK politicians have been specifically criticizing the provisions on the Northern Irish backstop which stipulate that Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom as a whole will remain inside an EU-UK single customs area in order to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.
