Council of EU Adopts Contingency Measures to Limit Damage From Possible No-Deal Brexit

The Council of the European Union on Tuesday adopted a series of legislative acts as part of its effort to limit the damage that could potentially result from the United Kingdom crashing out of the bloc with no agreement in place

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th March, 2019) The Council of the European Union on Tuesday adopted a series of legislative acts as part of its effort to limit the damage that could potentially result from the United Kingdom crashing out of the bloc with no agreement in place.

"The Council today adopted a series of legislative acts as part of its contingency preparations for a 'no-deal' Brexit scenario. The aim of these acts is to limit the most severe damage caused by a disorderly Brexit in specific sectors where it would create a major disruption for citizens and businesses," the council's press service said.

The legislative acts include a regulation that is intended to protect the social security rights of EU citizens residing in the United Kingdom and vice versa, according to the statement.

The newly adopted regulations also concerned the Erasmus student exchange program, fisheries, transport connectivity and the export of certain equipment and technology that could be used for both civilian and military purposes, the statement said.

On Monday, UK House of Commons Speaker John Bercow thwarted any attempt by Prime Minister Theresa May to hold another vote on her Brexit deal unless it was resubmitted in a fundamentally different form.

Last week, the UK parliament rejected May's withdrawal deal by an overwhelming majority for a second time.
