MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th February, 2019) US Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team has obtained evidence of communications between US President Donald Trump's longtime adviser Roger Stone and Organization 1, which is believed by many to be whistleblowing website WikiLeaks, concerning the cyberattack on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) networks ahead of the 2016 US presidential election, the court filing has shown.
The document, filed by Mueller with the US District Court for the District of Columbia on Friday, showed that the evidence had been found in the course of searches related to the so-called Netyksho case, where 12 Russian intelligence officers were indicted for hacking the DNC networks and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's campaign and releasing stolen documents, including through WikiLeaks, during the 2016 race.
"In the course of investigating that activity, the government obtained and executed dozens of search warrants on various accounts used to facilitate the transfer of stolen documents for release, as well as to discuss the timing and promotion of their release. Several of those search warrants were executed on accounts that contained Stone's communications with Guccifer 2.0 and with Organization 1," the document read.
Guccifer 2.0 is believed to be a hacker or a group of hackers behind the cyberattack on the DNC servers.
Materials obtained in the course of those searches led to the allegations that the defendants in the Netyksho case had stolen the Democratic Party's document for its release through intermediaries, including WikiLeaks, and showed that Stone "lied to a congressional committee investigating, among other things, the activities of Organization 1 regarding those stolen documents," according to the document.
In January, Stone was arrested by the US authorities and subsequently indicted on charges related to DNC documents leak. The materials, which the United States claims were stolen by Russian security services, something denied by Moscow, were published by WikiLeaks and included sensitive information about the campaign of Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump.
Back in January, Stone has denied the allegations and was subsequently released on bail. However, Trump's associate has previously acknowledged he had had communications with WikiLeaks and Guccifer 2.0.
Mueller is investigating allegations of Trump-Russia collusion and Russian meddling in the 2016 US election. Trump has characterized the Russia probe as a political witch hunt that has not produced any evidence of collusion in two years. Russian officials have repeatedly denied meddling in the US election and said the allegations were made up to justify Clinton's electoral loss and deflect public attention from actual instances of election fraud and corruption.
