Cruisers Association of Greater Washington Sue US Government Over River Closure - Filing

The Canoe Cruisers Association of Greater Washington, DC has filed a lawsuit against federal agencies responsible for the closure of the portion of Potomac River while President Donald Trump was at his private golf club in Loudoun County, Virginia, a court filing said.

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th September, 2018) The Canoe Cruisers Association of Greater Washington, DC has filed a lawsuit against Federal agencies responsible for the closure of the portion of Potomac River while President Donald Trump was at his private golf club in Loudoun County, Virginia, a court filing said.

"This action challenges the Rule, which revokes the public's legal right to access and enjoy a popular section of the Potomac River whenever President Trump visits Trump National," the court document said.

The lawsuit was filed against the US Coast Guard and its Commandant Karl Schultz and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the agencies chief Kirstjen Nielsen.

The plaintiff alleges on July 10, 2017 the agencies without a prior notice ordered the shutdown of the portion of the Potomac River, which was called a security zone, to facilitate the US president's visit to the Trump National Golf Club. The action affected persons who were not provided a public notice before the closure and, therefore, could not use this popular route.

The lawsuit says the DHS should rescind the rule allowing it to establish temporary security zones without notice.

Trump visited his golf club in Virginia nearly 50 times since he assumed office. Each time the security zones were established by the US Coast Guard and the DHS, the document noted.
