Czech Government Refuses to Sign UN Global Migration Pact - Deputy Prime Minister

The government of the Czech Republic on Wednesday decided not to sign a UN global compact on migration, stressing the need to differentiate between legal and illegal migration within the document, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Brabec said.

PRAGUE (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th November, 2018) The government of the Czech Republic on Wednesday decided not to sign a UN global compact on migration, stressing the need to differentiate between legal and illegal migration within the document, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Brabec said.

The Czech Republic has joined a number of other EU nation such as Hungary, Austria and Bulgaria that have also voiced their reservations about the global agreement, which aims to regulate the treatment of migrants and refugees. Poland said it might also back out of signing.

"The [Czech] Foreign Minister has presented to the cabinet additional information with regard to the global UN pact on migration. Eventually, the government decided that the Czech Republic will not join this agreement," Brabec told a press conference.

He said the Czech ministers were concerned that the pact did not differentiate between the types of migration, adding that the agreement would be submitted to the parliament for consideration.

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was approved on July 13 by all UN member states except the United States, which withdrew from the pact last year. The paper represents the international community's attempt to establish a common global approach to all aspects of international migration. The paper comprises 23 objectives for better managing migration at local, national, regional and global levels. The agreement is expected to be formally adopted at an intergovernmental conference in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh on December 10-11.
