The Syrian Foreign Ministry on Friday described the statements made by the participants of a joint European Union-UN pledging conference as "hypocritical," accusing the EU countries of supporting terrorists in the conflict-torn country
The third conference on "Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region," hosted by the European Union and co-chaired by the United Nations, took place in Brussels earlier this week. Participants from 57 countries pledged to provide a record $6.97 billion to support Syrians in need. Damascus condemned the conference, to which Syrian government officials were not invited.
"Hypocrisy in speeches of a number of officials from a number of countries that participated in the conference causes irony and anger as they are shedding tears for the Syrians, while, in fact, they are responsible, first of all, for the bloodshed among the Syrian people by providing unlimited support for terrorist groups and supporting a multidimensional war, including economic, which affects the lives of the Syrians," the statement, obtained by Sputnik, read.
Damascus also condemned the attempts to politicize the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Syria, stressing that its authorities can "create a blossoming future" without the support of the countries that participated in the Brussels conference.
