MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th March, 2019) At least 82 people have been confirmed dead in Zimbabwe due to flooding and landfall caused by the tropical Cyclone Idai, local media reported on Monday.

On Sunday, the ZBC broadcaster reported that 65 people were killed by the cyclone.

A group of ministers and officials arrived in the eastern province of Manicaland to asses an extent of the damage and a level of assistance needed, according to the broadcaster.

The cyclone hit neighboring Mozambique on Friday, killing at least 66 people. A day after, as Idai spread to Zimbabwe, President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared a state of disaster in the affected areas. According to the country's Information Ministry, at least five bridges have been either swept away or submerged in water as a result of the cyclone, hampering search and rescue operations.
