Moscow considers the holding of presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as an important stage in the normalization of the situation in the country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday
Earlier in the day, Congo's National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) published preliminary results of the presidential elections held on December 30, 2018. The Commission announced that opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi has won the election.
"We consider presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo as an important stage in the gradual normalization of the situation in this large African country, which has been experiencing internal political tensions for several decades.
We look forward to the further progress of Congolese society on the way to the political, social and economic development," the ministry said in a statement.
According to the ministry's data, the head of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress Tshisekedi gained 38,6 percent of votes, Lamuka coalition leader Martin Fayulu and the leader of the political union Common Front of Congo Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary came in second and third place with 34.8 percent and 23.8 percent, respectively.
In accordance with Congo's electoral law, the official results of the vote must be approved by the country's constitutional court and followed by the inauguration of the elected head of state.
