Dutch Government To Appeal Hague Ruling Over Carbon Emissions Target

The Dutch government said Friday it would file a lawsuit against a decision by a court in the Hague to make legally binding its carbon emissions target.
The Hague court of appeal last month upheld a previous ruling in which the Netherlands was obliged to slash greenhouse gas emissions by at least 25 percent from the 1990 levels by 2020.
"It [state] is commencing cassation proceedings to address the question of principle regarding the government's freedom of choice in relation to policy," the statement reads.
The government stressed it wanted the Supreme Court to clarify how its policies are reviewed and would not seek to diminish the commitment it made at the 2015 Paris climate change conference.
