ECHR Accepts Complaint of Russian Lawmaker Poklonskaya Accused by Kiev of Treason - Lawyer

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 25th September, 2018) The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has registered the complaint of Russian lawmaker Natalya Poklonskaya against the violation of her right to fair legal proceedings by Kiev that accuses the former Crimean prosecutor of treason, a lawyer representing her interests told Sputnik.

Following the decision of the Crimeans to rejoin Russia, Ukrainian authorities have accused a number of the peninsula's officials, including Poklonskaya, head of the Republic of Crimea Sergei Aksyonov and chairman of the Crimean parliament Vladimir Konstantinov of treason. Back in May, the officials filed complaints with the ECHR.

"We have received an answer from Strasbourg, which says that the complaint of our client was registered by the ECHR," Maxim Mogilnitsky said.

He noted that the complaints listed all violations committed by Ukrainian courts and General Prosecutor's Office.

In particular, the ECHR was informed that Poklonskaya's lawyers were denied access to the materials of the case, while their rights as defenders were not recognized.

The complaint also stressed that Ukraine had been violating the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the lawyer added.

According to Mogilnitsky, these facts clearly indicate that the case is politically-motivated.

The lawyers have not yet received ECHR decisions on the complaints filed by Aksyonov and Konstantinov, he specified.
