The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) reduced the amount of compensation requested by Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny by almost two-thirds, which demonstrates the validity of the position of the Russian authorities, the Russian Justice Ministry said in a Thursday statement.
The ECHR grand chamber ruled that Russia was to pay 50,000 Euros ($56,523) as non-material damage, 1,025 euros as material damage and 12,653 euros for costs and expenses to Navalny.
"The European court confirmed the reduction of the amount of compensation requested by the applicant by almost two-thirds. This demonstrates the validity of the position of the Russian authorities," the statement reads.
The ministry added that Navalny's complaints of him allegedly becoming a victim of persecution by the state were rejected by the ECHR in five of the seven considered episodes of suppression of illegal demonstrations.
"The compensation that was awarded by the European court will be paid per standard procedure in accordance with the Convention [on Human Rights] on condition that the applicant provides duly prepared bank details in due time," the press service of the Russian Justice Ministry told Sputnik.
Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) is known for its numerous publications alleging corruption in various state bodies of Russia as well as on the part of the country's businessmen and high-ranking officials. Navalny himself received two suspended sentences for alleged embezzlement in two separate cases, one in 2013, and another in 2014, for five years and 3.5 years in prison, respectively.
