ECHR Rules Russian Opposition Figure Navalny Should Get Over $70,000 in Compensation

The grand chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) satisfied the complaint of Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny, related to his detentions in 2012 and 2014, and ruled that a compensation for damages needs to paid to him, the ECHR said in a press release on Thursday.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th November, 2018) The grand chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) satisfied the complaint of Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny, related to his detentions in 2012 and 2014, and ruled that a compensation for damages needs to paid to him, the ECHR said in a press release on Thursday.

The chamber ruled that Russia was to pay 50,000 Euros ($56,523) as non-material damage, 1,025 euros as material damage and 12,653 euros for costs and expenses to Navalny, according to the statement.

The court found that violations against the Russian opposition figure were committed in several episodes, while in a number of cases also mentioned in the complaint no breaches were found.

Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) is famous for its numerous publications alleging corruption in various state bodies of Russia as well as on the part of the country's businessmen and high-ranking officials. Navalny himself received two suspended sentences for alleged embezzlement in two separate cases, one in 2013, and another in 2014, for five years and 3.5 years in prison, respectively.
