Egypt expects charter flights from Russia to Egypt's resort cities of Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada to resume in early 2019, local media reported, citing a source from the Egyptian Civil Aviation Ministry.
"The airports of Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh will start receiving Russian charter flights at the beginning of the next year. Egypt is ready to resume air traffic," the source said, as quoted by the Akhbar El Yom newspaper.
Russian aviation security specialists arrived in the Egyptian resorts of Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh on Sunday to begin inspections at the airports of these cities.
The inspectors will work in the country until December 16 and then prepare a report with the results of the audit for the Russian authorities.
Russia suspended civilian air traffic to Egypt in November 2015 after a bomb brought down a Russian plane, which took off from Sharm el-Sheikh, killing all 224 people on board. Before air traffic between Moscow and Cairo was resumed in April, Egypt had to seriously enhance its security.
Egypt used to be the most popular winter destination among Russian tourists before flights were suspended. Charter flights between Russia and Egyptian resorts were earlier expected to resume this fall.
