The Egyptian parliament passed a bill on Tuesday that would extend President Abdel Fattah Sisi's current term by two years, according to local media
The motion was adopted by the legislature's majority at a plenary session, the Egyptian newspaper El Watan reported.
The amendments would let the president, who took power in 2014, remain in office until 2024.
A group of 156 lawmakers proposed increasing the president's term from four years to six. Other suggested changes to the constitution aim to create an upper house of parliament, which is currently unicameral, and granting the president the right to appoint vice presidents.
According to media reports, the bill will be put to a referendum later in April.
