Egypt's President Supports Sudanese People's Will in Talks With Sudanese Military Leader

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi told Sudanese new military ruler Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan on Tuesday that Cairo supports the will and choice of the Sudanese people

CAIRO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th April, 2019) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi told Sudanese new military ruler Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan on Tuesday that Cairo supports the will and choice of the Sudanese people.

"During the conversation, the president confirmed that Egypt fully supports the preservation of security and stability in Sudan, and also supports the will and choice of the Sudanese people in shaping the future of the country and preserving state institutions," the statement, issued by the office of the Egyptian leader, said.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, as well as Ethiopia and South Sudan supported the Transitional Military Council of Sudan.

The African Union, a bloc consisting of 55 member states located on the continent of Africa, however, demanded that the Sudanese military hand over power to a transitional civilian-led authority within a maximum period of 15 days.

The union's statement was backed by EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.

The North African nation has been in turmoil since December 2018 when it became engulfed by protests. The rallies, becoming more and more violent took on a new turn as Sudanese citizens started calling for the resignation of the country's long-serving ruler, Omar Bashir.

On April 11, Bashir, who had been in power for nearly 30 years, was detained by the country's military. The transitional military council vowed to hold a new election in two years' time. However, protesters continued to hit the streets of the country's capital of Khartoum, demanding the military to hand power to a new civilian government.
