Election in Self-Proclaimed DPR to Be Based on Proportional Representation- Electoral Body

Parliamentary elections in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) will be based on the proportional representation system, Olga Pozdnyakova, the chairwoman of the DPR Central Election Commission (CEC), said on Saturday.

DONETSK (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th September, 2018) Parliamentary elections in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) will be based on the proportional representation system, Olga Pozdnyakova, the chairwoman of the DPR Central Election Commission (CEC), said on Saturday.

The election of the DPR head and members of the parliament are scheduled for November 11. Earlier in the week, the United States condemned the announcement of the self-proclaimed republics' plans to conduct elections, Kiev also stated that it would not recognize the results of the vote.

"The electoral process in the DPR is based on proportional representation and organized in a single Republican electoral district, which includes the entire territory of the state," Pozdnyakova told reporters.

According to Pozdnyakova, before submitting a list of their candidates to the parliament, social movements and parties should hold a congress or conference between September 21 and September 29.

CEC representatives will attend the congresses and will start required verification and registration procedures on the site, she clarified.

The election comes amid the escalation of tensions in the region, sparked by the assassination of DPR leader Alexander Zakharchenko killed in a blast at a cafe in central Donetsk on August 31.

The DPR and the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR), located in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, proclaimed their independence from Kiev in 2014, refusing to recognize the new central government. The secession prompted Kiev to begin a military operation in the area.
