ROME (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th October, 2018) Fifteen Russians were hospitalized on Tuesday after an escalator collapsed at the Repubblica metro station Repubblica in the Italian capital, the Russian embassy said.
"Fifteen Russians are receiving help in Rome's six clinics, three of them are in serious condition. Four Ukrainians were also hospitalized," Maxim Butlai from the embassy told Sputnik.
The escalator gave way under dozens of football fans as they were heading to a game between CSKA Moscow and Roma in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
Footage from the scene shows the escalator speed up before the bottom part collapses. Many people were trapped between the steps. One man had his foot partially severed in the fall.
A spokesman of the embassy told Sputnik doctors were able to save his foot. He said two men had undergone surgery to repair fractures. The diplomat added that all those injured appeared to be sober.
