Engine for Hypersonic Passenger Plane May Be Developed by 2050s - Russia's CIAM

A hydrogen engine for a future hypersonic passenger aircraft could be developed by the 2050s, General Director of Russia's Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM) Mikhail Gordin said in an interview with Sputnik.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th October, 2018) A hydrogen engine for a future hypersonic passenger aircraft could be developed by the 2050s, General Director of Russia's Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM) Mikhail Gordin said in an interview with Sputnik.

"The concept of a steady-flow hydrogen engine is viable, and it can be implemented directly in the demonstrator," Gordin said.

"If the tests of the demonstrator run successfully, this type of engine can be considered as part of a combined power plant for a high-speed civilian aircraft and a reusable aerospace system. This is a very difficult task. I think it could be accomplished closer to the 2050s," he added.

The CIAM is taking part in the HEXAFLY-INT (High-Speed Experimental Fly Vehicles) international project launched in 2014.
