BRUSSELS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) The European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission agreed on the provisions of the law that strengthens the powers of the European Union Agency for Network and Information and Security (ENISA) to counter cyberthreats like Wannacry and NotPetya large-scale malware attacks more effectively, the European Commission reported on Monday.
"Enhancing Europe's cybersecurity, and increasing the trust of citizens and businesses in the digital society is a top priority for the European Union. Major incidents such as Wannacry and NotPetya have acted as wake-up calls, because they dearly showed the potential consequences of large-scale cyber-attacks. In this perspective, I strongly believe that tonight's deal both improves our Union's overall security and supports business competitiveness," EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel said, commenting on the agreement reached.
The document also provides for an increase in agency funding. In addition, ENISA will be charged with increasing the awareness of citizens and businesses about cyberthreats.
The law also creates the basis of European cybersecurity certificates for products, processes and services that will be valid throughout the EU. The unified certification is also intended to remove potential barriers to market entry, the commission explained.
After the agreement is reached, the law must be officially approved by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. It will then be published in the Official Journal of the EU and will enter into force.
